Lab of Gerontologic Health Care Internet of Things

  Lab introduction


A cross-school and cross-disciplinary teaching facility, this lab was jointly planned and designed by the Nursing College and College of Health Science and Technology of the National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Science and the Architecture Department of the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in 2015. It aims to develop a program for the elderly through continuous health care and technological applications. Based on the concept of "aging in place", this project is focused on designing a living and care environment for the elderly where they can feel safe, stable and secure.


The demonstration area is divided into two sections; namely, "Healthy Elderly Living Area" and "Disabled Elderly Care Area".  It is designed for planning living arrangements for the elderly, introducing daily living aids, experiencing senior life simulation, providing a comprehensive nursing evaluation as well as alternative therapy, and learning hygiene and care practices, etc. In addition, it integrates technology to facilitate teaching and the application of health and long-term care for seniors, thus achieving its purpose of combining theory and practice.

Main equipment / laboratory teaching aids


Main equipment / laboratory teaching support includes the development of a friendly environment for the elderly, an aging simulation device, eating aids, clothing, transportation, education and entertainment, meridian acupressure massage group, facilities for stimulating physical and mental functions, nursing station, bed bath, parallel shift, etc.

。Face recognition (access control)



The system has a fully automated identification ability, so the user does not need to touch any sensing device. He has only to stand in front of a built-in camera to complete identification. With a built-in automatic image storage function, the system automatically captures the user's image and stores it for immediate treatment or subsequent tracking.




。Multi-function and touch control host system



The multi-function touch control host system can handle home life settings including security, home situations, home appliance control, video intercom, etc., according to users’ needs. It can also control and save energy consumption by adjusting the settings for remote monitoring.




。Emergency notification care system



When there is an emergency, the staff can contact the care center through the emergency care host or the portable emergency button. The care center will assist in providing services such as accident handling, ambulance notification, emergency contact notification, home check, etc.




。Out of bed detection (silhouette detection and contour representation)



To monitor mentally handicapped or motion disabled elderly who get out of bed and are at risk of accidental falls or injury, this system can detect movements like getting up, sitting up in bed, getting out of bed, and setting off the warning range and other conditions according to the data. Caregivers can receive immediate notification through a mobile device.




。Health Management System



Two-in-one blood pressure and blood glucose meter with built-in 3G SIM card, has a measuring value that is transferred to the cloud and recorded after each measurement, allowing users, their relatives and friends to check any time. When abnormalities occur in the measurement, nurses will provide an immediate care reminder. This system facilitates self-healthcare management.




。Bed guard system



The daily monitoring of sleep habits and practices of the elderly makes it easy to manage their sleep health and daily routine. Beds are considered a basic necessity for health care management. With a bedsore prevention function, this three-phase system offers out of bed fall detection and sleep health management combined into one.




。Smart robot care system (IOS Android)



With functions such as remote monitoring through mobile device APPs (iPad or cell phones), video recording, calling etc., the pleasant robot design will not make people feel that they are under surveillance. It offers remote care management of the elderly and children at home, providing the safest and most convenient way in caring for children and seniors, as well as monitoring homes and pets.





The garden outside is also part of the demonstration classroom. It is designed for healthy or partially dependent elders, so the garden is wheelchair accessible, allowing a person to sit or stand while they tend to plants--no need to bend over.

Most of the time, our students maintain the garden as volunteers. Gardening is one of many activities we encourage to help students develop as multi-faceted, balanced individuals. The garden is part of their professional training for use in their future careers. 
The garden provides elders with an activity that symbolizes life, allowing them to experience the joy of watching living things grow. Its ornamental plants also beautify the building and provide the campus with a pleasant garden area.

Gardening therapy is one of the elective courses offered at our school; professors work together with gardening instructors for interdisciplinary teaching. This garden allows students to learn therapeutic garden design and maintenance, along with a chance to practice gardening as a form of therapy.
